Things usually go smoothly in the world of vintage chauffeuring. But every now and then, a little mishap reminds us just how much adventure comes with a 90-year-old car.

Last fall, we had the honor of chauffeuring Mark and Somer’s wedding getaway in Allegan, Michigan with our 1930 Pontiac Six. The reception was full of joy, and we were enjoying giving children little mini getaway rides in the vintage car. Spirits were high—until we heard the unmistakable pop of a tire.

Now, I’ve changed flats before, but never a wood-spoke wheel with a tubed tire. As I rolled up my sleeves and assessed the situation, I was met with something far better than luck—community. A group of gentlemen from the reception gathered around, intrigued and eager to lend a hand. One brought a jack, another an air compressor. Together, we figured out how to separate the rim from the spokes and swap in the spare.

What could have been a delay turned into lively entertainment, and more importantly, Mark and Somer still made their getaway on time.

I’ve learned two things about vintage chauffeuring. First, with a car from 1930, surprises can—and do—happen. Second, people are incredibly gracious and generous when it counts. Sometimes, the hiccup becomes a memorable moment.
